He received his Medical Doctor's Degree from The University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois in 1981. He did his Internal Medicine Residency and Cardiology Fellowship at Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Carballo is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, and a Member of the American College of Physicians.
